Data privacy and app uninstallation

What SmartSize stores and why, how shopper data is handled, the GDPR webhooks it registers, and what happens when you uninstall.

This article explains what data SmartSize stores, how shopper information from the fit quiz is handled, the GDPR webhooks SmartSize registers with Shopify, and what happens when you uninstall the app.

Merchant data

SmartSize stores the configuration you create in the app: your size charts, fit quizzes, product display rules, saved styles, translations, and usage metrics, along with your Shopify session tokens and shop settings. This data lives in SmartSize's database so the app can serve your popups and remember your setup.

Shopper data

SmartSize does not collect a shopper's name, email, or any Shopify customer-account identity. It never ties quiz answers to a customer profile.

What it does use is the information a shopper enters into the fit quiz — height, weight, age, and fit preferences — to compute a size recommendation. So you have an accurate picture, here's how that information is handled:

  • To power the recommendation. The quiz inputs are sent to SmartSize's recommendation service, which returns a size. These requests are logged (with the quiz inputs, not any personal identity) so SmartSize can measure accuracy and show you usage insights.

  • To remember returning shoppers. An anonymous visitor identifier lets a shopper who returns to your store see their previous result without redoing the quiz. It contains no personal information.

What the popup stores in the shopper's browser

To keep the experience smooth, the fit quiz saves a few values in the shopper's own browser using localStorage (no third-party cookies are used):

Stored value

Purpose

Retention

Quiz answers

Restore a shopper's previous answers so they don't start over.

90 days

Visitor id (per audience)

Recognize a returning shopper and show their prior result.

90 days

Anonymous unique visitor id

Anonymous identifier that persists across quiz sessions.

Persistent

Unit preference

Remember the metric/imperial choice.

Persistent

This data lives on the shopper's device. A shopper can clear it any time by clearing their browser storage for your store.

GDPR webhooks

SmartSize registers the mandatory Shopify compliance webhooks and responds to each:

Webhook

When Shopify sends it

customers/data_request

A customer requests their data. SmartSize does not hold customer-identity records, so there is no customer profile to export.

customers/redact

A customer requests deletion. Acknowledged by SmartSize.

shop/redact

Sent by Shopify 48 hours after uninstall. Acknowledged by SmartSize.

If you need shopper or shop data deleted ahead of these flows, contact SmartSize support (below) and the team will handle it directly.

What happens when you uninstall

When you uninstall SmartSize from your store, the app immediately:

  • Deletes your Shopify session tokens.

  • Marks your store inactive and disconnects it.

  • Clears the cached quiz and size chart data that served your storefront.

Your size charts, quizzes, and settings are retained after uninstall, so that if you reinstall, your work is still there. If you want that configuration deleted rather than kept, contact support to request it.

Your responsibilities as a merchant

  • Privacy policy. Mention SmartSize in your store's privacy policy — that it processes shopper measurements to recommend sizes and does not store customer identities.

  • Deletion requests. If a shopper asks you directly to remove their data, contact SmartSize support.
