Every paid SmartSize plan can be billed monthly or yearly. Yearly plans cost 20% less, and — like all SmartSize charges — they are billed by Shopify and follow Shopify's app-billing rules. This article covers only yearly plans. For how charges appear on your bill in general, see How SmartSize charges appear on your Shopify bill.
1. A yearly plan is billed once a year, in advance
Your yearly cycle starts the day you approve the plan and runs for 365 days. At the start of the cycle Shopify creates one charge for the whole year and adds it to your next Shopify bill. On the same date next year the plan renews automatically and a new yearly charge is created.
You can see your renewal date in Shopify under Settings → Billing → Subscriptions.
ℹ️ The App Store listing shows the note "Recurring and usage-based charges are billed every 30 days" under every app. That is Shopify's standard text; a yearly SmartSize plan is charged once per year.
2. If you uninstall before the year ends
Uninstalling SmartSize cancels the subscription, so no further yearly charges are created. It does not shorten the year you already paid for:
Shopify does not cancel or shorten the current year, and does not apply a credit for the months you won't use.
The yearly charge was created on the day you approved the plan, so it still appears on your next Shopify bill — even if you uninstall a few days after approving.
Shopify itself doesn't issue refunds for app charges; refund requests for any app go to the app's developer.
If you uninstalled and believe the yearly charge shouldn't apply to you, reply to us with your .myshopify.com URL and we'll look at your case individually.
3. If you reinstall before the year ends
The year you paid for is still yours until its original end date. What to expect:
You'll be asked to choose your plan again. Shopify cancels the subscription on uninstall and doesn't restart it on its own, so SmartSize opens on the Free plan and shows the plan page. Pick your yearly plan and approve it on Shopify's screen.
You are not charged twice for the same days. When you re-approve a plan before the paid year has ended, Shopify accounts for the time you already paid for instead of billing a second full year.
No new free trial. The 14-day trial is offered once per store, so a reinstall doesn't start a new one.
Your settings and size charts are kept. SmartSize keeps your data while the app is uninstalled, so everything is back as you left it.
After re-approving, check Settings → Billing → Subscriptions in Shopify: it shows the renewal date that now applies.
4. Changing plans during a yearly cycle
Upgrading to a higher yearly plan, or moving from monthly to yearly, takes effect immediately. Shopify charges only the difference for the remaining part of the cycle.
Downgrading to a lower yearly plan, or moving from yearly to monthly, takes effect when your current year ends. Until then you keep the plan you paid for, and no credit is issued.
An example
You approved a yearly plan on 16 February, so your year runs until 15 February of the next year.
Date | What happens |
16 February | You approve the yearly plan. Shopify creates the charge for the full year; it appears on your next Shopify bill. |
20 May | You uninstall SmartSize. No further yearly charges will be created. The year you paid for still runs until 15 February. |
3 June | You reinstall SmartSize and approve the same yearly plan again. Shopify accounts for the time you already paid for — you are not billed a second full year for the same days. |
Renewal date | The next yearly charge is created, unless you uninstalled or switched plans before then. |
💡 Tip: if you don't want another year, uninstall SmartSize or switch to a monthly plan before your renewal date, so no new yearly charge is created.
